# What Is a Buyer Readiness Index? See Whether a Deal Can Move

A Buyer Readiness Index shows the evidence behind a buyer’s next step and whether readiness is rising or falling.

Key takeaways

- A Buyer Readiness Index scores one buyer in one deal from what the buyer said and did on calls, so a lead score or a rep skills index answers a different question.
- PitchGenius scores each call from 0 to 100 across five dimensions, and every dimension carries a verbatim quote or is marked unproven.
- Direction matters as much as level, so a 51 that climbed from 38 beats a 62 that has not moved since June.
- The index does not predict a close, and you can test it by comparing ten won and ten lost Proposal-stage deals from your own pipeline.

A Buyer Readiness Index scores whether one buyer is prepared to take the next step in a live deal. It earns trust when every dimension carries the buyer's own words and a gap is marked unproven instead of guessed.

Sales teams track emails sent, meetings held, pipeline created and forecast category. None of those numbers says whether the buyer is closer to a decision than last week. Forrester reports that [86% of B2B purchases stall during the buying process](https://www.forrester.com/press-newsroom/forrester-the-state-of-business-buying-2024/), which makes a number for the buyer's side of the deal the missing column.

## What is a Buyer Readiness Index?

A Buyer Readiness Index is a score for one buyer in one deal, built from what the buyer said and did on calls. The [Buyer Readiness Index™](https://pitchgenius.ai/learn/buyer-readiness-index) in PitchGenius gives each call a score from 0 to 100, scores five dimensions from 0 to 10, and labels each dimension strong, weak or unproven.

Every dimension carries a verbatim quote from the transcript. The diagnosis also names two blockers, one primary and one secondary, each with the evidence and the next action.

The index reports an inference. SalesWings, which sells readiness scoring inside Salesforce, says the same in its glossary: buyer readiness is "an interpretation based on available evidence" and a fact that is not "directly observable" ([SalesWings, buyer readiness](https://www.saleswingsapp.com/glossary/buyer-readiness/), fetched October 1, 2026). The quote under each dimension lets a rep argue with the inference.

## Which kind of readiness does the score measure?

Four different things carry the word readiness in sales software, and they score different people from different inputs.

Method and limits: the table sorts the terms by whom they score. It ranks no product, and the SalesWings and Mindtickle products solve different problems from a live-call score.

A lead score tells marketing when to hand a lead over. A rep readiness index tells enablement who needs training. Neither one says whether the buyer in the second call is moving, and that gap is the one a call-based index fills.

## What are the five dimensions?

Each dimension answers one question about the buyer.

- **Pain Recognition.** Does the buyer name the problem in their own words, with a cost attached?
- **Trust Formation.** Does the buyer show the real problem and send the rep real numbers?
- **Problem Urgency.** Does the problem force action this quarter?
- **Solution Confidence.** Does the buyer believe this solution produces the outcome they want?
- **Commitment Behavior.** Does the buyer take the specific next action, such as bringing in a stakeholder or sending data?

Source: [PitchGenius product demo](https://pitchgenius.ai/product-demo), chapter 8, the frame at 13 seconds of the recording, cropped from the 1920 by 1080 capture to 1048 by 530 pixels.

Method and limits: sample data, no customer result.

The frame shows why a flat average would mislead. Trust sits at 7 and solution confidence at 2, so the same overall score could come from a buyer who needs a proof point or from one who needs a decision date. The two blockers above the dimensions say which one it is, and here the primary blocker is that the cost of the current state is unquantified.

## Why is unproven a score?

A compliment carries no evidence, so the index leaves it out. "This looks great" earns nothing. "I've asked legal to pre-review the MSA" earns a strong mark because the buyer spent effort on it.

When the call holds no evidence for a dimension, the index records unproven and shows the gap. A model that fills the gap with a guess produces a number that feels precise. A model that writes unproven tells the rep which question to ask on the next call.

## How do you know whether a readiness score works?

SalesWings gives the right test for any readiness rule in its glossary: validate it against outcomes, because "if leads labelled 'ready' are routinely rejected by sales or fail to progress, the criteria need adjustment" (fetched October 1, 2026).

PitchGenius publishes no win-rate benchmark for its index and no customer results table, and its [llms.txt](https://pitchgenius.ai/llms.txt) says so. You can run the test on your own deals in an afternoon.

1. Take ten won and ten lost deals that reached the Proposal stage.
2. From each recording at that stage, mark each of the five dimensions as quoted or unproven.
3. Compare the two piles. If lost deals show no more unproven dimensions than won ones, the index adds nothing to your motion.

## Does direction matter more than level?

Direction tells a rep where the deal is heading and the level tells where it sits. A 51 that climbed from 38 across two weeks of buyer action is a better deal than a 62 that has not moved since June.

The demo's sample opportunity shows the shape. Its five calls score 50, 64, 78, 86 and 93, and the history list on the opportunity page shows that line beside the CRM stage. Every number there is sample data written for the demo.

## Can readiness change inside one call?

Readiness moves within a single call. A buyer opens skeptical, warms up through discovery, spikes in risk when the implementation plan comes up, and settles after a relevant customer example. Scoring only the final transcript hides that path, and two buyers who end at the same score from opposite directions are different deals.

PitchGenius keeps the path in two places. The live overlay shows a readiness level next to each suggestion during the call. After the call, a readiness rung the live call already verified cannot be walked back silently by a weaker post-call read, and only an explicit at-risk call overrules it.

## What happens when the index and the CRM disagree?

When the two disagree, look at that deal first. The CRM says Negotiation and the index falls across two calls, so a stalled deal sits in a late stage. The CRM says Discovery and the index climbs fast, so a deal that deserves attention sits in an early stage.

[Stage–Readiness Alignment](https://pitchgenius.ai/learn/stage-readiness-alignment)

shows the pair on one screen. [Buyer readiness versus deal stage](https://pitchgenius.ai/blog/buyer-readiness-vs-deal-stage)

walks through two Proposal-stage deals that read the same in the CRM and opposite on the buyer side, and [seven signals in how a buyer talks](https://pitchgenius.ai/blog/buyer-signals-before-crm)

lists the conversation changes that move the dimensions first. The score writes back as a note in HubSpot, Pipedrive, Salesforce or GoHighLevel through [the CRM integrations](https://pitchgenius.ai/integrations).

## What the index does not do

The index does not predict that a deal will close. It reads the buyer's evidence at the moment of the call and names what is missing. A forecast still needs your pipeline data, and the index adds the buyer's side to it.

Take your largest late-stage deal and write the buyer's own words for each of the five dimensions. Any dimension you cannot quote is unproven, whatever the stage says.

## Frequently asked questions

### What does Buyer Readiness Index mean?

A structured score for whether one buyer is prepared to take the next purchase step, built from what the buyer said and did on calls. Each dimension carries a quote as evidence.

### Is a Buyer Readiness Index the same as lead scoring?

No. Lead scoring ranks prospects on fit or engagement, early in the process. A Buyer Readiness Index tracks an active buyer across calls and shows the transcript evidence behind each dimension.

### How is a Buyer Readiness Index different from a sales readiness index?

Sales readiness means a company rule that sends a lead to sales, and some vendors use the term for rep skills measured against a profile. A Buyer Readiness Index scores the buyer in a live deal.

### Can buyer readiness change during a call?

Yes. New information, trust, concern, risk and stakeholder issues change how ready a buyer is to proceed inside one conversation, and the live overlay shows a readiness level while the call runs.

### Does PitchGenius predict whether a deal will close?

No. The index is decision support with the evidence shown, and PitchGenius publishes no win-rate benchmark for it.
