The Challenger Sale has a rep teach the buyer something new, then take control of the conversation.

What is the Challenger Sale?

Definition

The Challenger Sale is a sales method built on teaching the buyer something new, tailoring the message to them and taking control of the conversation. It comes from a 2011 book by Matthew Dixon and Brent Adamson, whose CEB research sorted more than 6,000 B2B reps into five profiles, with Challengers outselling relationship-focused reps in complex sales.

How it works

The book profiles five types of reps, the Hard Worker, the Lone Wolf, the Relationship Builder, the Reactive Problem Solver and the Challenger. CEB, the research firm behind the study, is now part of Gartner. Its data found Challengers over-represented among top performers in complex, insight-driven sales.

A Challenger conversation opens by teaching the buyer a fact about their own business they did not already have, tailors that teaching to what the specific stakeholder in the room cares about, and stays willing to push back on price, timeline or scope instead of yielding to stay comfortable.

When it fits a buyer

The Challenger approach fits complex B2B sales where the buyer has not yet framed their own problem correctly, the setting Dixon and Adamson's research targeted. A buyer who already has a clear, correct view of their problem needs less teaching and more confirmation.

The three moves

  1. Teach

Bring the buyer a fact about their own business they did not have before the call.

  2. Tailor

Frame that teaching around what this specific stakeholder in this specific company cares about.

  3. Take control

Stay comfortable pushing back on price, timeline or scope instead of yielding to keep the buyer comfortable.

How PitchGenius applies it live

On a live call a Challenger rep opens with a fact the buyer did not have about their own business and ties it to the role of the person speaking. When the buyer pushes for a discount, the rep holds the line. That is teach, tailor and take control in the order the buyer hears them.

PitchGenius matches a buyer to Challenger before the call, and the Buyer's Blueprint page explains how.

If Challenger is picked, the uploaded script is rewritten line by line into Challenger phrasing instead of summarized, and the desktop overlay shows the Challenger badge beside the buyer's name.

See how the Buyer's Blueprint decides when Challenger is the right call.
