SPIN selling moves a buyer through four question types until they state their own need.
What is SPIN selling?
Definition
SPIN selling is a sales questioning method built by Neil Rackham after his research firm Huthwaite studied 35,000 sales calls. It groups questions into four types, Situation, Problem, Implication and Need-payoff, and moves a buyer from describing their setup to stating the value of solving a problem in their own words.
How it works
Rackham published the method in his 1988 book SPIN Selling, after Huthwaite tracked which questions correlated with a sale closing and which did not. Reps who won large deals asked fewer opinion-seeking questions and more questions that built toward a need the buyer stated out loud.
Each question type does a different job. Situation questions gather the facts of the buyer's current setup. Problem questions surface a difficulty inside that setup. Implication questions size the cost of leaving the problem alone. Need-payoff questions have the buyer describe why solving it matters, in their own words rather than the rep's pitch.
When it fits a buyer
Rackham's research, published in SPIN Selling, found the method outperforms in complex sales with a high price, multiple stakeholders and a considered purchase decision. In a low-value, single-call transaction the four-question sequence adds friction the underlying data did not support.
The four question types
Situation
What does your current process for this look like today?
Problem
Where does that process slow down or break?
Implication
What does that slowdown cost you when it happens?
Need-payoff
What would it be worth to fix that before next quarter?
How PitchGenius applies it live
On a live call SPIN runs as a fixed order. Situation questions stay short, because facts already in the CRM should not be asked twice. Problem comes next, then Implication, and the Need-payoff question waits until the buyer has named the cost themselves.
PitchGenius selects a technique from four choices, SPIN, NEPQ, Challenger and hybrid, in the same pre-call step that builds a DISC and OCEAN profile of the buyer.
The overlay shows the matched technique badge beside the buyer's name during the call, and a SPIN match means the uploaded script is re-voiced line by line into SPIN phrasing instead of summarized.

Frequently asked questions
01What does SPIN stand for?
Situation, Problem, Implication and Need-payoff, the four question types Neil Rackham defined in his 1988 book SPIN Selling.
02Who created SPIN selling?
Neil Rackham, based on research his firm Huthwaite ran on 35,000 sales calls.
03Does PitchGenius use SPIN selling?
PitchGenius can match a call to SPIN as one of four technique options, and re-voices an uploaded script into SPIN phrasing when SPIN is the match.
04How is SPIN different from the Challenger Sale?
SPIN is a question sequence that lets the buyer state their own need. The Challenger Sale, from Matthew Dixon and Brent Adamson, has the rep teach the buyer something new about their business before asking any questions.
